What is the role of vitamins and minerals in atherosclerosis prophylaxis?
Vitamins E, C and beta-carotene prevent oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and reduce atherosclerosis accordingly. Selenium and Zinc have a similar effect. When oxidized, LDL more readily fastens to the walls of vessels. Group B vitamins, especially folic acid, lowers homocysteine - one of the prime factors that contribute to atherosclerosis.
Nicotinic acid lowers LDL level while elevating the HDL level. In addition it lowers the level of triglycerides, which are one of the risk factors for CHD.

When should cholesterol-lowering medications be used?
In the case of elevated cholesterol levels or in the presence of symptoms associated with CHD or other metabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity), it is often advisable to supplement a proper diet with medications that are specifically designed to lower cholesterol and help combat atherosclerosis.
One of these formulas is VITRUM® CARDIO. If the diet alone produces no results, even when supplemented with appropriate vitamins and minerals, a doctor should be consulted for possible drug treatment.

What cholesterol levels can be considered normal?
The following cholesterol levels are accepted as normal:

Total cholesterol < 200 mg/dl (5,2 mmol/l)
LDL cholesterol < 135 mg/dl (3,5 mmol/l)
HDL cholesterol women > 40 mg/dl (1,0 mmol/l)
men      > 35 mg/dl (0,9 mmol/l)

CHD patients should aim at lowering LDL cholesterol down to < 100 mg/dl (2,6 mmol/l).

Is high cholesterol the only risk factor for heart attacks?
No. In addition to high cholesterol, other known factors for atherosclerosis and heart attacks include smoking, hypertension, obesity (especially a "paunch" around the waist), and pancreatic diabetes. Men over the age of 45 and over 55, especially those with a family history of heart attacks, also have increased risk.

How can the risk of heart attack be decreased?
For decreasing the risk of heart attack one should aim to lower the level of LDL cholesterol in the blood and control other factors that promote atherosclerosis. A sensible program of physical exercise can be important, as well as giving up smoking and altering dietary habits. Vitamin-and-mineral preparations like VITRUM® CARDIO provide the body with the necessary nutrients for this. (But if these measures are insufficient, it is necessary to consult a physician, who can administer the appropriate drug treatment.)

BY LOWERING CHOLESTEROL - YOU PROTECT YOUR HEART AND YOUR ARTERIES!

VITRUM® CARDIO contains fiber, lecithin, beta-sitosterol, cod-liver oil, vitamins and minerals. It helps lower cholesterol levels, prevent LDL oxidation, and compensate for vitamin deficiency.
